What is Desert Salon?
Since 2018, Desert Salon has been held annually in Joshua Tree, CA. Attendees have worked on novels, short stories, screenplays, essays, poetry, and more. Since then, we’ve had major successes—projects developed at Desert Salon have gone on to be featured in major national magazines, literary magazines, anthologies, and podcast episodes.
Behind the scenes

What is the retreat like?
Aside from lots of quiet writing time, the four-night retreat includes group meals, nightly readings, optional group hikes, an evening out in Pioneertown, and more.
What is S’mores & Stories?
This is our annual pop-up reading with Mojave Mallows. Join us for marshmallow roasting and fireside readings from Desert Salonners and local writers. Keep an eye on our Instagram for event details.

Does Desert Salon host readings outside of Joshua Tree?
Sometimes! We have hosted an off-site event for AWP in Los Angeles, a reading at San Francisco LitCrawl, and more. Our other reading series is known as Tales from the Edges of California.
